Housing: Mapping Metrics and Narratives

Workshop 1

1. Use this link to download QGIS. 
2. NYC Open Data is a platform for accessing free public data published by New York City agencies and other partners. We will use this to download Land Use Data. 
   • You can refer to this document for standard colors used to represent Land Use. 
3. Access HOLC Shapefiles on the Mapping Inequality Project website. 
4. For Satellite imagery, we will use XYZ Tiles. The XYZ Tile option allows us to add common base maps by pulling directly from tile layers. You must enter a name for your layer and URL to connect in order to connect to the web map. Below are just a few maps that can be linked.
   • Satellite Imagery: http://mt0.google.com/vt/lyrs=s&hl=en&x={x}&y={y}&z={z}
   • Hybrid (Satellite Imagery with Boarders/Labels) http://mt0.google.com/vt/lyrs=y&hl=en&x={x}&y={y}&z={z}
5. If you are interested in representing quantitative data, refer to the workshops for the Spaces and Territories of Housing class. 

Workshop 2

1. We will download raster data from SEDAC - Hosted by CIESIN at Columbia. 
2. Use the NYC Open Data platform again to download 311 data. 
3. Access Social Explorer through CLIO to download census data. 
4. Download shapefile of census tracts from the ERC Dropbox.
