Gaining Access to Social Explorer

Social Explorer is a web-based data visualization tool that allows users to explore current and historical census and demographic data using maps.  Users can create maps and reports to illustrate, understand, and analyze demography and social change.

Here is how to access Social Explorer.

  1. Go to SocialExplorer.com.
  2. In the upper-right corner of the screen, you'll see a green ribbon with the line "Professional Edition provided by Columbia University."  Click this.
  3. Sign up!  By creating a username and password, you'll be able to save the maps you create and access Social Explorer from non-campus computers for 3 months.  To set up an account for off-campus access, follow this link.

After 3 months, if you still need off-campus access you'll need to log in through the above link (also on the library website) to re-establish your affiliation with Columbia/Barnard.
